Using the Library
The Wolfson Reading Room is open to the public on weekdays free of charge.
You are welcome to visit us and study our books, documents, photographs and other materials in the Wolfson Reading Room. It is not necessary to make an appointment or become a member in order to use the materials available. However, all first-time readers are required to bring the following:
- A) Some form of official photographic ID with a proof of address on it.
- B) Some form of official photographic ID together with a proof of address or together with a letter of introduction (from an employer or in the case of students from a tutor).
A large collection of books is available in the Wolfson Reading Room on open access. Documents, photographs, fragile material and rare books are stored elsewhere in the building. Readers can search this material in our Collections Catalogue and request it using call slips available in the Reading Room.
Internet access is available via our public access computers in the Wolfson Reading Room and through our wireless network.
Call times for ordering from the basement
- Morning call times: 10:30am, 11:30am
- Afternoon call times: 1:00pm, 2:00pm, 3:00pm, 4:00pm
- Tuesday late call times: 5:00pm, 6:00pm
Please remember that some materials are stored offsite, they are marked accordingly on the catalogue record, and it takes seven working days to retrieve them from our offsite storage facility.

Only Members or Friends of the Wiener Library may borrow books. Please see the Friends section for details on how to become a Friend of the Library.
Most books which have been published after 1970 may be taken out. As a Member you may borrow six books at a time for three weeks. You can renew them twice by phone or email. Overdue fines are £1 per week per book.
We are unable to process your membership details and payment online. However, you can complete your membership application by visiting the Library with your ID (including proof of address) or a letter from your employer/tutor, and completing the payment by cash or credit/debit card transaction.

This entitles staff and/or students to join for a reduced annual rate of £20.

A digital book scanner and two digital microfilm readers are available in the Wolfson Reading Room.
All material to be copied has to be approved by the Librarian at the Enquiry Desk.
Permission to copy material depends on its physical condition, copyright and/or whether it falls into the category of restricted materials.
The following materials may only be copied by Wiener Library staff:
- Very large heavy books
- Unpublished material
- Fragile items
Some materials may not be copied at all.
For all unpublished material the form below has to be filled out prior to copying the material, stating that the copies are for private research only.
Use of a digital camera (no tripod, no flash) is permitted. You must provide your own camera. Use is subject to the condition of the material. Published material can only be photographed within the copyright restrictions.

Please be aware that no more than 5% or one article of any published item may be copied. Staff will restrict the number of pages to be photocopied from any item to 5%.
We will try to post the requested copies within a week but we cannot guarantee this.
Payment has to be made in advance. You can pay on our website or make a cheque out to Wiener Library Ltd. in Pound Sterling.
Enter the total number of pages you wish to pay for as "Quantity" in the form. On completion of payment you will receive an order number; please include this when you send us your completed forms for reproduction of published material or reproduction of unpublished material.
