Opening of the United Nations War Crimes Commission Archive at The Wiener Library

We are pleased to announce that from Friday 21 April 2017 The Wiener Library will be offering researchers onsite access to the archive of the UN War Crimes Commission (UNWCC). This large archive contains a wide variety of documentation relating to the handling of war crimes by the Allied powers between 1943 and 1949, including: lists of alleged war criminals, files of charges brought against them, minutes of meetings, reports, correspondence, trial transcripts and other related materials. Further information about the full contents of the archive can be found in our Online Catalogue.

From 21 April researchers will also be able to browse a digital copy of the archive in its entirety via a computer terminal in The Wiener Library’s Reading Room in Russell Square, London. Anyone wishing to view the files will therefore need to arrange to visit us. If you would like to make an appointment to view the files or if you would like to enquire further about access conditions, please email info@wienerlibrary.co.uk.

Due to anticipated high levels of demand for access to the archive, we would strongly advise researchers to contact the Library in advance of visiting. When travelling to the Library to consult the archive for the first time, please ensure that you bring both photo ID and a separate proof of address with you, as this will be required in order to grant access. You will also need to read and sign an Unpublished Material Form prior to obtaining access to the files. Requests for copies will be considered on a case-by-case basis, but please be aware that charges apply.

Further information about the context of the opening of this previously inaccessible archive can be found in today's article by The Guardian, including the role played by Professor Dan Plesch in persuading officials in the USA and the UK to allow wider access to the archive. Please note that while it will be possible to search the archive finding aid via The Wiener Library’s online catalogue, access to the individual archive files themselves will not be made available online.
