As the visit of Hungarian leader Gabor Vona approaches, Library director Ben Barkow makes the following statement.
Gabor Vona, leader of Hungary’s Jobbik Party, which is the third largest party in the Hungarian Parliament, plans to speak at a rally in the UK on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day. It seems clearly calculated to insult the memory of the Jews and Roma murdered by the Nazi regime and its allies, among whom Hungary’s wartime regime under Admiral Horthy was prominent. Jobbik is an extreme right-wing party known for its racist, antisemitic and anti-Ziganist views.
The visit of Mr Vona may cause some people to question the decision to elect Hungary to the Presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance for 2015 – a year of major Holocaust-related anniversaries. Will Hungary use this platform to play down its guilt for the murder of hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews, something its government is accused of doing at home?
We condemn the visit.
