At a time when violence and upheaval in Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq and elsewhere have created an upsurge in the number of refugees, people are becoming more aware of the important role language plays in shaping our perception of forced migration and those affected by it. To commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day, we went online and invited the Twitter community to join our fifth annual Social Media Debate on 24 January 2017.

Over the course of an hour, we asked a series of eight questions under the theme of this year's debate - Refugees or Migrants? Discussing Forced Migration Online.

We received an array of thoughtful comments and thoughts from individuals and institutions around the world. Below are some of our favourite tweets of the day.
